Challenge Hike

Date: 17th Sep 2019 Author: Richard Smith

The 7th Scouts took part in the first ever Darlington Challenge Hike on Saturday 14th September.  The Group entered 2 teams that were pitted against other groups in the town.  Both teams did very well with one of the teams coming second! Well done to them!

The day started early at High Coniscliffe a little village just outside Darlington.  The teams set off with maps and mobile phones at the ready following their route cards to guide the way they came across activities, obstacles, puzzles and challenges at various points around the course.  They had to scan lots of QR codes with their mobile phones which produced a question or challenge for them to answer or complete. They also encountered physical activities such as the water run trying to fill a container that had holes in it against a timer, to build a stretcher and transport a leader also a treasure hunt and bearing exercise to name a few.

The day ended with all the teams finishing at Blackwell on the banks of the River Tees where they got to rest with a drink and hot dog. The scouts did well and enjoyed it and we can’t wait for the challenge hike next year.

Put your phone down and what are you left with? Just teamwork, courage and the skills to succeed.’
