Scouts Flood Awareness

Date: 3rd May 2018 Author: Richard Smith

Following on from the Beavers and Cubs sessions the Scouts had Anna Caygill return from the environment agency to talk about flood awareness! I didn’t realise how much of Darlington was in a flood risk zone! Did you know that all the emergency services headquarters on St Cuthbert’s way are at risk of flooding from the nearby river Skerne?

Anna Caygill the Engagement Officer for Flood Risk from the Environment Agency came in to give a session on flood safety. This is because the surrounding areas of the group attended are at risk of flooding.

If you are concerned about flooding and are located within a flood risk area check your flood risk at:

For those areas at risk Flood warnings may be available. Sign up for flood warnings online at:

In some areas flood warnings are not provided, for example those at risk from surface water flooding (flooding from excess water with insufficient drainage) during an event check local news, radio and weather to keep up to date. For help and advice during an event contact Floodline: 0345 988 1188 or contact emergency services if you are in immediate danger.

If you are at risk of flooding, you can prepare your property by moving important items and electricals upstairs and switching off the utilities. Sandbags or alternatives may be used to block the flood water however in some cases it may be advisable to invest in Property Level Protection.

In the coming months community engagement work will begin in Darlington starting at the most at risk communities, the engagement will be in many forms such as door to door, school engagement and community drop in events. If you would like more
